Dr Katharine Bate is a general cardiologist with additional subspecialty training in electrophysiology; she completed both her physician and advanced cardiology training programs at Royal North Shore Hospital, followed by an electrophysiology fellowship at Liverpool Hospital. Dr Bate also has an ongoing interest in medical education and is the current Course Co-Convenor for Cardiology in the Master of Medicine program at the University of Sydney, and has an ongoing role in the teaching of medical students and junior doctors.

While Dr Bate is happy to manage all types of cardiovascular conditions, she has a special interest in heart rhythm disorders, obstetric cardiology, personalized risk assessment, and exercise as therapy for heart disease. She is a caring doctor with a straightforward and compassionate communication style. Dr Bate is welcoming new patients at her rooms in the San Clinic.

Research

During Dr Bate's specialist training, she completed her PhD at the University of Sydney, studying the ways that atherosclerosis alters the immune system and determining how this could be used to develop biomarkers for early disease detection. Dr Bate won multiple prizes during her doctorate, including the Peter Bancroft Prize for submitting a thesis that was accepted without corrections. She continues to work with her research colleagues in the Cardiovascular Discovery Group at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research led by Professor Gemma Figtree, studying how we can better identify patients at risk of heart disease. Dr Bate's latest research interests relate to heart rhythm disorders, advances in cardiac ablation technologies, and the benefits of exercise as therapy for heart disease.
